I'm sure many of you have seen the ladies and sometimes guys located at different company booths at events or ladies giving away free stuff, especially alcohol in bars(Beer/Liquor Girls), clubs and restaurants as well as the people that give you free stuff, coupons and info in stores.
These people, depending on the type of event they are working have a few different titles. The ladies at events and in bars that are always rather pretty are known as Promotional Models(promo girls) . For less appearance demanding companies geared more towards pure business or sales are known as Brand Ambassadors and sometimes Product Demonstrators.
The one thing they all have in common is that they usually love what they are doing and get paid surprisingly well with pay ranging from 15 an hour and up for in-store demos as far as 17- 40+ an hour on the higher end for Promotional Models and even Brand Ambassadors. Another thing we all have in common is answering the same question to people at events. "How do I get into doing what you do?" "Who do you work for?" (which is usually not answerable on-site per company policy) even the answerable questions most of us (not all) are hesitant to give out information to locals for one main reason: COMPETITION! The more locals that know, the harder it is to land jobs. It's almost treated like some secret society that no one wants to talk about, and for fairly good reason I suppose. My answer was usually, the easiest way to get in is to do a google search for promotional and marketing agencies including the above job titles and sign up for all that you can find. It is a bit time consuming, some agencies you may work for once and never hear from again due to the fact that they may not have much in your area. It really depends on where you are located and willing to travel. A lot of other agencies you may get offers from quite often, then even more once you have proven your reliability and ability to do a good job. One thing that will be important when registering is PICTURES. Pictures that show you at your best, especially for the Promo Girl jobs.They don't necessarily have to be professional, some agencies are starting to lean towards preferring less of the professional pics, and a few still require it. A good option is a mix if possible.
Craigslist is also another good resource even though it is being used a little bit less these days for this type of work due to way too much garbage popping up on there.
I will be doing a post on some of the top agencies that I have personally worked with successfully with no problems, as well as a few stories of problems that I have had with other companies such as delayed pay, lack of organization and communication etc.... I will also be posting on tips for successful events, working around problems that may arise and key things that are important to know and do (or NOT do)
Creating a Model Mayhem profile is a good idea as well, although it is geared mainly toward other modeling types, but it doesn't hurt. If you are looking to do promotional modeling, chances are you may be interested in other areas of modeling too and that is a good start, as well as a good place to find time trade for free photos from photographers.
